How To Maintain Your Concrete Fences

Concrete fences offer considerable benefits as a great alternative to timber fencing for fencing your property. They are also attractive because they are durable, versatile and easy, low-key maintenance. You can choose to have a design on both sides of the concrete panels, making it lovely to look at from every angle.

Concrete fencing is strong and offers an effective windbreak barrier, withstanding up to 40 mph winds. It can also act as an acoustic barrier, reducing outside noise. Great for buildings near a busy road.

Durable & Versatile Concrete Fencing

Concrete fences are proven to be more durable than their wooden counterparts. Unlike wooden fencing, concrete fence posts will not rot and will not be affected by insect activity. The condition of your concrete fencing deteriorates much slower than wooden fencing when under the same weather conditions. However, keeping a check on the condition of your fencing will help maintain its longevity.

Maintenance

Concrete fencing and posts do not require ongoing treatment like their wooden equivalent. Maintenance is a low effort for concrete fence posts as you simply ensure they remain firmly rooted in the ground. Check to see if any parts of your fencing show cracks or crumbling every couple of months. Immediately refill these areas and apply sealant.

Cleaning Concrete Fencing

Keep any weeds or plants from gaining a hold on your concrete, especially if not sealed.

Climbing plants like ivy or clematis can damage the integrity of your concrete, causing breaks in the sealant that can damage the area.

You can power wash your concrete fencing to remove any weather debris or build-up of dust, dirt, grass and plants. This is especially important if you are considering painting your concrete fencing.

You can also paint your concrete posts and fence panels to change the look, blend in with your surroundings, or just because you want to. Doing this also makes cleaning them a lot easier. However, do make sure you use the correct materials. Ensure you use an acrylic latex primer. Choose a paint designed for concrete, like acrylic paint; masonry paints work well and are long-lasting.

Washing Your Concrete Fencing

If any area of your concrete fencing is unsealed, wait to wash it until it has been resealed. Doing so can push the dirt into the fencing. Before cleaning your concrete fences, check for any unsealed areas and fill them.

While power washing is the easiest and quickest way to remove debris, you can also wash by hand.

A combination of detergent and water will work, but you can also buy specific cleaning agents: pH-neutral products, alkaline cleaners, or bacterial cleaners. Bacterial cleaners are the best option if trying to remove dog urine stains.

Graffiti, Tar & Paint Stains

These are not common problems, but they can happen, mainly if work is occurring around your fencing. Graffiti, unfortunately, is not something anyone could predict. If power washing can not remove the problem, you may have to consider sandblasting. Ensure if you choose this, the company knows what it is doing and will not damage the sealant.
